Author Spotlight: Viviana Mackade

This short and sweet edition of Author Spotlight features the incredible Viviana Mackade. Viv’s most recent novel She Came With the Tide, is featured in The Rocks Stars: Our Songs, currently available on Amazon.

Welcome Viv! So, one of the most requested questions for authors is what we enjoy reading. Let me ask, was there any particular book which gave you the writing  bug?

It wasn’t one particular book, but how generally a certain type of books made me feel–good. And I said, “Hey, what if I try to write the stories I have in my head? It would be the coolest thing if my characters make other people feel like this.”

It seems a lot of authors have felt the same way – emulating what they’ve enjoyed. How would you describe your specific writing style?

Quick. As a reader, I need action–not necessarily the explosion kind, but things have to move. As a writer, I tend to cut a lot that’s not action. In fact, my writing sin is underwriting. I always have to go back and forth, making sure everything is clear, well explained.

You know your characters and their backstory, yet needing to slow the pace to ensure the reader has a good understanding can be tricky. What about your books in general? Any specific genre?

All my stories are contemporary, with different degrees of suspense. They are written from 3rd person, with both the perspectives of the hero and the heroine.

Any strange subject you’ve had to research for your writings?

For my last story, She Came With the Tide, the heroine, Andrea, was taken into a cult by her parents when she was 15. Doing research for it wasn’t strange as much as mind opening. And hard.

I can only imagine. Other than research, what’s the hardest part of being an author?

Marketing, hands down. I guess because I lean toward the artistic temperament, it’s hard to see my babies as pieces to sell. My background as a lawyer helped me, though. Law school didn’t give me a job, but it sure gave me strength and a clearer, more focused and cooler mind.

With all of the tools you’ve learned to focus, is there anything you would consider your writing Kryptonite?

Lack of sleep, which happens way too often, and family tension (a fight with Marco, or someone feeling unwell).

So much of our writing is tied to emotions – not just ours, but the character emotions as well! Your most recent project was just released, correct?

Yes, She Came With The Tide, a novella that is part of The Rock Stars: Our Songs collection, was published a couple of weeks ago.

Can you tell me a bit about the novella?

He’s impulsive, fearless, and fun loving.

Erik Axelsson, Ax, had it all: talent, fame, money. He’d lived the rock & roll life fully and with gusto until it wasn’t fun anymore. Without a second thought, he’d traded the spotlight with the Floridian sun, and the guitar with a surfboard. Young, rich, and free from anything – what more he could need?

She’s innocent, scared, and in trouble.

Andrea Smith escaped the life imposed to her when her parents joined a cult. After years on the run, hunger pushed her to accept a stranger’s offer for breakfast. She had no clue her life changed with that simple ‘yes’.

But the past catches up with her, forcing Andrea to choose what person she wants to be: the scared cult member that obeyed in silence, or the new woman Erik made blossom.

Love me some rock star book boyfriends. Especially if they have a slightly wicked side! Who do you envision portraying the lead characters of your book?

Erik is played by Chris Hemsworth. Andrea is an older Emma Watson.

Mmmmm. Beautiful couple. So – what’s next on the docket for Ms. Viv?

I’ve just started working on a new novella for another collection that will be out this summer. I’m at the very first stage, knowing the characters. It will be set in Crescent Creek, Erik and Andrea’s (the couple from She Came With The Tide) town.

Looking forward to reading them! Thank you for taking the time to make a guest appearance. One last question – What advice would you give to aspiring authors?

Write, write, write.

Viv’s novella, She Came With the Tide, along with the rest  of the The Rock Stars: Our Songs collection can be purchased through Amazon for only $.99, or free with KU.
