Today I’m featuring Erotic Romance author, SM Stryker. So, tell me a bit about your journey into writing. I’ve heard it was quite the story.
Yes, well, I grew up in a small country town, in an abusive home until I left at the age of eighteen. I struggled trying to find my place in the world, from one tragic situation into another. I always believed things happen for a reason and knew that one day I would understand why. I finally did when I found my husband and was blessed with four beautiful daughters.
Wow… sounds like a soap opera! You’ve used your story as inspiration for your writings, correct?
Yes. Although I never thought I would start writing, I knew my life would make for one hell of a story, but finding or making the time to write was always the issue. In April of 2014, I sat down in front of my computer and started to write. Through lots of tears, I wrote my first book, Stolen Innocence, as a way to exercise the demons of my past. From there I was hooked and have shared more about the events of my life through many of my other books. These titles include: Never Forgotten Love, Loving Redemption, Anchored to Love, Never Expected Love, Sacrifice of love and The Locket. I’ve found now I have time to write, it’s my outlet – my sanctuary – and in every book, I write there is always part of me written into it.
Tell me about your novel, The Locket. It’s my latest release and is a standalone book. It’s raw and gritty. Filled with roller coaster of emotions.
Can I have a little teaser?
Samantha learned at an early age that life isn’t always fair. When her mother re-marries, she acquires an older brother that takes advantage of her innocence. She learns that there is more to family than words and actions. Oliver used to be a carefree boy until a horrifying incident takes his family away. He has learned one important lesson at his young age, ‘Protect those you care about’. When he sees a scared little Samantha, Oliver’s heart was drawn to her, to help and protect her. He was her Protector. But he was keeping a secret from her. When Oliver’s identity is revealed, Samantha, feeling betrayed and deceived goes into hiding, running away from the man she has loved most of her life. Oliver has to find her before Samantha’s past catches up with her. Will she be able to survive or will her past take her away forever leaving Oliver, a shell of a man?
Sounds suspenseful. You mentioned several of your books were inspired by real life events. Other than your past, do you have any authors who inspire you, favorites perhaps?
HM Ward, Sylvain Reynard, Jasinada Wilder and so many more.
Any particular book you’ve felt drawn to?
Yes, Fifty Shades. The story of a broken man and an innocent girl finding each other. To me, it’s the story of their relationship, not the BDSM.
Speaking of BDSM, what’s the strangest thing you had to research for your writings?
I’m sure you found more than you bargained for! Other than odd search engine results, what’s the hardest part of being an author?
Saying goodbye to my characters.
How would you describe your writing style?
I have a story in my head, I have an idea of where I want the story to go, but I let the characters tell the story.
Tell me a little more about your books in general.
I love romantic suspense. M/F. I strive to keep my readers second guessing and filled with emotions at each turn of the page. I write in both 1st person and alternating perspectives.
What drew you to the idea of writing The Locket in particular?
It’s part of my life. A deep dark secret that as with all taboo stories, it was swept under a rug.
Can you give me a fun fact about this book?
I took the picture on the front cover of the book. I couldn’t find a picture that I had in my mind, so, I took the locket that was given to me which is where I detailed the locket in the book. Set it up and used my phone.
Mother, author, photographer, cover artist… you wear many hats! Let me add another – casting direction. Which actress/actors would portray the lead characters of your book?
To be honest, I’ve never thought about that.
Keeping with the move theme, what is one movie adaption of a book which absolutely drives you bonkers, and why.
LOL, I don’t watch a lot of TV or movies. I stay hidden away writing most times.
Staying hidden can have its benefits. I imagine with your content, many fans can relate to you. Have you had any odd fan encounters?
I had a fan cut her hair to look more like me.
What is your writing Kryptonite?
Time. Sometimes, it seems that I don’t manage my time well. Mostly if I am having a block as to what I am going to do in a particular scene. I dink around until something comes to me instead of skipping that scene and writing another.
I can absolutely relate to that. The Locket is currently available for sale. Are you working on anything currently?
Yes, I haven’t decided on a title as of yet, but I just finished it and it is out to my beta readers.
What advice would you give to aspiring authors?
Write, even if it isn’t good. It is practice and once you get into the flow, the words will just come out.
Sound advice. I want to thank you again for taking the time to talk about yourself and your novel, The Locket.
